Inspiration or Desperation: Paula Abdul Gets an Appetite!
Posted by: Gary, in American IdolUnlike most previous weeks on the reality show, American Idol, Tuesday night saw the four remaining contestants being given the opportunity of selecting their own choice of songs they wished to publicly crucify, with the proviso that it was a song that had ‘inspired’ them in the past.
From that category one would have expected offerings along the lines of, Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On, or even Frank Sinatra’s My Way, so in that case how on earth did Jason Castro come up with Bob Dylan’s Mr Tambourine Man and David Cook’s choice of Duran Duran’s Hungry Like the Wolf?
Viewers could have been forgiven for thinking that the only thing worse than his first choice would have been Carlo Douglas’s Kung Foo Fighting but no, Jason them came up with Bob Marley‘s I Shot the Sheriff which clearly made Randy Jackson want to shoot Jason for choosing it as his second song. Maybe Jason just has a thing for Bob’s! (Marley, Dylan???)
David Cook, the 25-year-old who hails from Blue Springs, Missouri and now lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, offered Hungry Like the Wolf and it appeared the only person, other than David himself of course, to be inspired by the rendition, was Paula Abdul as she commented that it had served to give her an ‘appetite’! Watch out boys, you know what she’s like when her appetite takes a hold!
For his second course David cooked up Baba O’Riley by The Who to which he accompanied himself on the guitar. Inspirational? We doubt that!
Next up with an equally surprising number was Syesha Mercado, the 21-year-old from Sarasota, Florida who currently resides in Miami, and the only female left on the show, who gave the judges and the audience her shrieky interpretation of Tina Turner’s Proud Mary. This obviously inspired Randy as he went on to tell her she was now in ‘the zone’, a popular phrase on American Idol but not one that actually indicates much as a phrase!
With what might have been preserved as a subliminal message to voters in the up and coming Presidential elections Syesha chose A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke for her second inspirational song of the evening. Bet Barack Obama was inspired!
David Archuleta, the fresh faced 17-year-old from Murray, Utah stepped up to the plate with two classic. Stand By Me by Ben E King and for his final choice he went for the Elvis Presley romantic number, Love Me Tender.
Both Archuleta’s offerings saw him being exposed as probably the judges favourite of the evening after Paula said, “That was one of my favorite performances from you. I felt your heart. It was fantastic and very beautiful.” See, what did we say, she’ll start feeling your heart and who knows where it could end with Paula Abdul?
Well one thing we can all be thankful for is that no one chose, Mungo Jerry’s In the Summertime or worse than that, Ricky Martin‘s She Bangs!
Lets hope from now on the contestants are directed as to who’s songs they perform even if it is Mariah Carey or Neil Diamond!

You seem to have gotten this week mixed up with several weeks ago. Inspirational songs were during Idol Gives Back week and this week was picked from the top 500 songs that changed rock and roll. Hope that clears things up a bit for you.
