Brother Love - Neil Diamond to mentor Idol Top 5
Posted by: Gary, in Neil Diamon, American Idol Season 7, American Idol
Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show will hit American Idol on Tuesday night when Neil Diamond becomes the guest mentor to the remaining 5 contestants.
Kristy Lee Cook and Carly Smithson didn’t fare well with the guest mentoring of Mariah Carey and Andrew Lloyd Webber in the last 2 weeks. Who will be singing “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” anymore when they are dropped into the bottom two?
It will be an especially hard week for Brooke White with Neil Diamond songs putting pressure on her tender vocal chords.
Jason Castro was criticized last week by Simon Cowell for a poor performance, but he is still a fan favorite.
David Archuleta and David Cook continue to deliver strong performances, let’s see if we can separate the man from the boy with a performance of Diamond hit “America”
The choice of songs this week could be more critical than ever before.

This week on American Idol has lots of people looking for ND songs. Here is a list I’ve compiled with all of Neil’s available tracks on iTunes, Rhapsody and Napster

As I read the comments on many web sites about this week’s Idol mentor, Neil Diamond, I am saddened by the ignorance of so many young people who think they know music and the music scene. Neil Diamond is not only one of the most talented and prolific song writers of the past 40 years but his music is still contemporary to hear today and he has influenced the writing and singing AND performing of so many musicians that even “musicians” who don’t know him at all, have been influenced by him. The people they worshipped growing up were certainly influenced by Neil. His music is sweeping in scope, wide in range and rythym and deep in melodies and poetry. I will be surprised if this week is not a standout in Idol history. His songs are melodic and singable as well as flexible for each performer. Very unllike Weber’s stuff which though also fantastic does not lend itself that well to pop artists.

If I could hear David Cook do some mastery on one of my most favorite, albeit oldest Neil Diamond song “Play Me” I think I would be ready to die without regrets.
